Photo-Shoot Three

Record

Photo-shoot Title:
"A Losing battle within"

Photo-Shoot Concept & Aim:

The concept behind this photograph is to blend both my artists together. This is blending the style of Federico Bebber with the style of Edward Honaker. The aim of this is to capture the feeling of depression and anxiety the paint of dealing and living with these mental problems with the visual illustration  of Federico Bebber's dispersion effect.  This then should strengthen the connotations ideologies of  the project.

Date & Timing:
This photo-shoot will take place on the 2017 at . This will be taken at this time and day because it is convenient for me.

Location:

This photograph will take place in East Herrington in Sunderland this is because it is a quite and accessible location for me to get to that has the facility of a plain white wall.

Props:

I will need to be wearing normal everyday modern clothes. Jeans and a top as this will represent the majority  of young ring this time. I might experiment with a topless photoshoot to then generalise to a wider audience the visual manipulated physically and or digitally to create a more striking photograph.

Models:
I myself will be in the shot. This will be a self portrait photograph influenced from styles of Laura Hospes. I have chosen myself as a model as it captures the audience I want to attract of males showing their stuggle with mental health. I will be taking two positions for this shoot following work from my first photoshoot.

Team:

I will be my own team. I will be the model for the photograph as well as the editor. The camera will be on a stand with a timer set to take the photograph.

Equipment  and Preparation:

The camera I have used for this photoshoot is a Fujifilm Finepix S9600 Camera with a Integrated 28-300mm lens. The batteries were fully charged before shoot.

Desired Shots:

My desired shot is to have a two person shot. Both people will be the same subject. One character will be facing the camera trying to covering out the other character. The other character will be facing the other screaming. The person covering their ears will have the added dispersion effect to visually look like they're been blown away  or dominated by this inner self.

Reference Images:

From left to right the first three are Federico Bebber's work and the last two are Edward Honaker. Theses images are references for my final project. as the patterns of dispersion the first on is the smoke effect that I have experimented with. The second one used a interesting string effect along side the expression of the model shows torment and distress. The third one the model is covering the face and has an almost perfect stance for the photoshoot I am planning. Then the Edward Honaker photographs remind me of the depression and tone of the create.

Photoshoot One

This is the first attempt at editing this photograph through photoshop using digital manipulation. The Photographs were taken with the shutter speed of 1/1000 seconds. With the F-Stop at f/4.8. The ISO was set to ISO-200.  This dispersion effect differs from my previous experiments as instead of smoke I have attempted something new with square pixels breaking off from the model. This photoshoot takes elements Edward Honaker and his work with documenting depression and mental disorders as well as work from Federico Bebber with his digital manipulation style and work on dispersion effects.

This photograph shows two subjects used from one model. The subject that is screaming represents the voice inside your head, inner demons of a man who has a mental disorder. This mental disorder reach a range of disorders from depression or anxiety or schizophrenia. This fits under the topic of Beneath the surface as its beneath the mans skin and physical appearance to show his mental state. We see his mind struggle with the figure of depression slowly blowing him away symbolising the subject losing his mind.

This refinement uses a deeper colour gradient map to try and make the photograph look less lighter and more darker to portray further implications of broken and torment. With the change of the gradient map and brightness the contrast create the look I was looking for and so I don't believe this is a successful refinement.

However the refinement of the first one helps to show more of the dispersion effect and the subject. As the first subject was to bright that when applying the ink effect some of the dispersion effect was lost however with the refinement making the image less dark helps the image be shown more. This is a more successful refinement as the black and white effect helps, in the style of Edward Honaker, to show depression and anxiety.

This refinement goes back to my previous experiments of using smoke for my dispersion effect. This uses a different gradient map to really empathises the colours of the subjects shirt. The smoke effect has worked creating a good dispersion effect however I believe the square dispersion effect works much better with the idea of this photoshoot the smoke effects was a nice attempt to refine and try and seeing what it looked like with a different dispersion effect. However the new style of work has much more powerful impact compared to the smoke.

Evaluation.

I have achieved a successful first attempt at changing the dispersion effect to squares instead of smoke. This dispersion effect makes a more practical and powerful image. I believe that I have achieved my aim in portraying the narrative of my photograph. Here we visually can see the subject trying to block out the screaming. This is representing the subject trying to block out the voices and thoughts in his head. The inner voice is physically shown here to portray these feelings and emotions while also showing how it feels to live with this disorder. I believe the squared dispersion effects was successful in making the subject appear as if he getting blown away as the screaming subject is made bigger than the other. This presents dominance.

I believe the smoke refinement didn't go to well as It wasn't the correct effect to use through my work. However as much as the squared dispersion effect work i dont think it looked as best as i could off made it. However while using the square dispersion effect helped me experiment with other effects other than smoke and for a first attempt i was quite proud however with practice i believe i have developed creation of this dispersion effect seen within my 4th photo-shoot of 'Utopia' which is the next one. However for a refinement i will aim to improve this effect with new photographs and a better more detailed attempt at the effect.

For improvements to my future refinement i will make the "thoughts" subject more creepy or physically distort from the "body" subject.  I will attempt to remove the shirt and breath in showing the ribs of the subject while striving to show veins and muscles popping out to show the power and volume of depression. The photograph will be a black and white filtered image. Improvements to the effect will also be applied making the dispersion effect look much better through the digital manipulation stage.

Camera Controls:
ISO: ISO-200 Shutter Speed: 1/1000second F-Stop: f/4.8
Source light added from bottom left looking up at the subject and straight in front at eye level on the right of subject to add more depth to the shape and structure of the models form adding shadows to the complexion.

Artificial Light was used for this photo-shoot reflecting from the bottom left and right of the subject. The light from the bottom left will help light up the side of the model that is blocking his ears as its the same direction where his "thoughts" will be yelling at him from. The light from the bottom right will be shining on the "thoughts" to lighten up the facial expression. Camera control settings used are the ISO set to ISO-200. The shutter speed was 1/1000 and the aperture was f/4.8.

Composition of this photo-shoot was key to create the narrative. Simplification was used by taking the photographs on a blank slated wall allowing for me to digitally manipulate the subject out of the photograph by himself as a layer to add a more blank backdrop with a slight gradient. Repetition and pattern were created using he squares of the dispersion effect. Rules of space was used within this photograph to allow some space between the subjects however have the "thoughts" bigger and taller than the "body" this is to show dominance. Rules of triangles was easily achieved with the subjects arms that are blocking his ears. However with the posture of the subject it doesn't form a stable composition. Rules of evens and odds are used within this photograph as there is two subject within the photograph, even tho just one model,  The even number of subjects within this photograph has helped to create a feeling of tension and have a slightly un-natural look. Rules of thirds have been used with the eye level of both subjects been on the top horizontal line while both subjects will sit on each of the vertical lines either left or right line. Framing was used to enlarge the "Thoughts" subject to make him appear larger than the subject while he is at the end of the frame and the "body" subject is quite close to him further from the edge thats away from him. Vantage points were applied to allow the subjects to sit on a horizontal and eye level perspective.

Visual Elements were also integrated within the photo-shoot. Pattern was seen in the square shapes of the dispersion effect. Texture was used within the subjects face giving him an angry and / or distressed look to make the skin rough and tight. Space was used around the subjects and between them. making the "thoughts" larger than the "body" but having the body" take up more surface area within the frame as the "thoughts". Colour is used in the photograph using blue and orange gradient maps This helps to darken the shadows on the subjects and help the skin glow.  However i want to improve it by making it more striking and clearly conveying a message of depression and schizophrenia by making the photograph black and white with a good level of grittiness while allowing the colours to contrast. Tone is used on the subjects by brightening their sides by darkening their opposite sides and their heads. Form can be seen in the depth of the subjects clothing this has created the 3 dimensional look on the models. Shape is used with the models arms stretching out to cover alot of the surface area of the frame as compared to how tight and close the other models body is like. Lines were used on the dispersion effect making the lines branch off from the subjects side outwards.

The Narrative of this photograph then comes together. The narrative i aimed to create with this photograph was the visual representation of having schizophrenia. People shut other people who have a mental disorder down and say things like "Get over it" or "Its all in your head" well thats true because thats why its a mental disorder but its hard to "get over" a mental disorder especially schizophrenia as it is a constant battle someone faces daily 24/7 to shut out the voice inside their own head. We see in this photograph how the depression takes a from identical to the person yelling and screaming at the self. This shows how loud and hard the thoughts can be to stop and keep low. We see the subject try and block it out with great distress showing how painful it is to deal with it. The pieces coming off the subject show that it eats away at you and you break bit by bit getting worse and worse as it goes on and grows bigger.

Second Photoshoot

Refinement  Three

Production

Refinement  One

Refinement  Two

The third refinement for my shoot have used the new photographs taken for this. I have removed the shirt of the "thoughts" model this then gives him that naked natural feel. Showing its inside the head as clothes are worn by the body and not the mind. I used a photograph from the first photoshoot to contrast the new photo-shoots. I liked this photograph as he blocks his ears and looks away in pain. This photograph of the mind was used to try and show range and volume, In a silent image you can image the levels of the yelling coming out. The first photograph has no effects done to the image   (ie lighting, contrast, brightness, colour, saturation) The second one uses a red gradient effect to connotate anger rage. The third one in the style of Edward Honaker is to add the black and white filter into the photograph. This portrays depression with the colourless appeal.

This photograph is just in black and white with the "thoughts" subject slightly brighter than the "body" this is to easily see the expressions more clearly on his face. This has his arm by his side instead of forward with a less angry expression on his face.

This photograph now has the "Thoughts" now with his arms back as if its been restrained this now shows struggle on both sides. This image also shows a gruesome image of the rib cage with the bones sticking out. This  photograph added a high contrast levels. The second photograph tried to add a darker blackground to it however you can clearly see the edges of the subjects with the change in background some of the pixels in the dispersion effect are lost and show instead of scattered pixels its like a breeze of pixels that then at points look to separated.

This time the "thoughts" model will have a shirt on. This shirt is black to symbolise the death and depression. This shirt contrasts the light shirt worn by the other subject. This photograph now helps make the "thoughts" more human as he wear clothes. His posture which steps forward in anger and disgust helps spread his body out over the frame just like the "body figure does". The first image uses the original photographs and doesn't add any effects. The second photograph  tried to saturate the photograph more with brighter hues to make the subjects look more vibrant. Which looks like a better photograph than the original as it separates the pink skin and pink shirt. The third Photograph turns the whole photograph into black and white in the style of Edward Honaker. The Fourth photograph Adds a darker background in the photograph this is a deliberate experiment to try and fill the backdrop with something. It has worked however in using it has lost some of the dispersion effect as was the error last time. With the black and white filter and black shirt and the black backdrop you can see the lines on the subject that are on the edge of his layer and so makes it less believable of a photograph. The fifth photo removes the black and white filter and has the images natural colours shown which still loses the dispersion effect and lines on the edge of the clothes. The black and white backdrop didnt work as much as I hoped.
