Bath Of Milk
Weaving
Family Potrait

This photograph was taken in the style of Edward Honaker. I filled a bath with Milk and lay in it while the camera slanted and positioned on a tripod took multiple photographs on a timer.
I could not get the photograph from above due to having to take it on a tripod and an inability to hold the camera at a birds eye angle without dropping it or having it damaged by water and milk.
This photo is the closest recreation of Edward Honakers "Bath Of Milk" photograph and was done in my own way by changing the angle and blindfolding the subject. The
blind fold hides the identity as the subject is now behind a mask and this allows him to be a completely different persona. The milk in the path gives of a cloud like look. This then blurs the subject into the liquid and represents such things as a dream which shows that the subject in submerged in his own mind in his dream world, Thinking more about whats not real rather than what is reality. This also goes with the blindfold as he is refusing to see the world as it is.
This experiment has went very well creating some powerful and striking photographs in the style of Edward Honaker. I feel to improve these photographs I could edit the contrast of the black and white to make it stand out more. I could also try and capture a birds eye view and truly capture simplification.
Bath Of Milk Experiment
Refinement One
This selection of photographs are chosen ,inspired by Edward Honakers Bath of Milk photograph, are the selected photographs that was chosen from the hundreds taken to be refined further. Theses selected photographs will be put through Photoshop and alternated to fit the style and techniques used by Edward Honaker with my own experimental ways to make the photographs more unique to my style.

Weaving Experiment Photoshoot

This photograph was taken in the style of Edward Honaker. I took a photograph of me in a suit and printed it off onto cardboard. Using a knife I slices slim lines horizontally and vertically . I had another photograph ( identical to the one I am using ) to thinly slice all the different rows to weave into the photograph.
Here this fits into the theme of beneath the surface as underneath as the weave represents the mans clustered mind and his disorganized sense. It helps to show how he himself does not understand who he is and that he doesn't have an identity.

This weaving experiment has went very well to test out physically manipulation The photography was in colour but a black and white filter has been used to mimic Edward Honaker and portray depression. For future improvements I will try and improve my weaving skills as well as have a coloured image with black and white weaves. I also will remove the background in the photograph to avoid peoples attentions been drawn to the surrounding and not the subject this would then isolate the subject.
This practical weaving effect has worked well for an experiment. The thin cuts and the thin tight weaving in between them looks excellent as the similar style of Edward Honaker is clearly visible. However I would like to improve this with a few different experimental designs. For example i would like to weave the black and white filter photograph to the coloured version and vice versa, as a simple idea which I would like to explore.

This uses a F-stop of f/3.2 This is so less light comes into the lens. The shutter speed of 100. Its ISO is set on ISO-200.This photograph was digitally enhanced through Photoshop Elements 14. This photograph uses the 'Sangria' filter this filter allows for the darkness of the tones to amplify. The dark colours of the uniform are transported to plain void black in this filter. This gives it no color or texture creating a shadow quality and giving erie tensions. The liquid is shining on the subjects arm which shows a wet texture and gives a slippy and bumpy texture with the patterns of the skin mixed with the running water. The camera focuses on the subjects arm and hasn't focused on face this along with the position of the camera and the subject shows a low angle shot making the subject seem vulnerable. The subject has been positioned so he is far away from the camera to show his unimportant and how small he is.

This uses a F-stop of f/2.4 this is so that it doesnt focus on the background to much. The shutter speed of 100. its ISO is set on ISO-200.This photograph was digitally enhanced through Photoshop. This photograph uses a "Whistler" effect this allows the photograph to have that rough grainy look to it. The skin colour of the subject then changes to a much paler. This gives a lifeless quality to the subject. This along with the characters position portrays the emotion and the mood of this photograph. The lifeless angry expression shown on the face is shown mixed with the body language and position of the subjects body been tense and close and small making him look vulnerable.

This uses a F-stop of f/8 and a shutter speed of 300. its ISO is set on ISO-200.This photograph was digitally enhanced through Photoshop. A black and white filter was applied. Colour enhancements where done on the subject to create a black silhouette like figure. The Vantage point on this photograph is still a low angle however this is a close up as it now focuses on the subjects head and eliminates all the surronding mise-en-scene. This photograph applies to the rule of thirds as the subject is on the left axis. Tone is used via the dark ink black which contrasts the pale white water. Texture is seen on the subjects hair and the soaking blindfold. The still water shows motionless qualities which represent the subjects mobility.

This photograph was digitally enhanced through Photoshop. A black and white filter was applied. Colour enhancements where done on the subject to create a black silhouette like figure. This photograph comes from a low angled vantage point close up to the subjects head but the focus is on the body that is further away blurring the head and in doing so the face. This uses a F-stop of f/6.4 and a shutter speed of 200. its ISO is set on ISO-200. These camera controls allows me to capture the quality of the subject with the texture of the liquid on the clothes and skin. This photographs shows more of the figure and body of the subject this represent rest and false impressions. This idea of false impressions goes with the idea of milk been pure. The false impression of the the subject been happy and emotionally stable is a lie when in reality is mentally unhealthy.

This photograph was digitally enhanced through Photoshop. A black and white filter was applied. Colour enhancements where done on the subject to create a black silhouette like figure. This dark void created with the colour enhancements creates an erie ora around the photograph further supported by the Subjects face submerged in the water. Vantage points have been ignored as no horizontal or vertical lines have been used. This enhances the tension. Tone is used to contrast the dark subject to the pure white milk. White and milk are meant to symbolize purity, and innocence and youth. Shown with a pitch black subject full of evil and resentment.
This Family Portrait experiment was done using stock family photographs of mine. This then adds an element of realism as the family photographs show natural true human behaviour of family, compassion, intimacy, Love, friendship,
community. This then adds more feelings and emotion to the photograph instead of an artificial photograph. For each one of my photographs I blurred the face away and then I cut my head out of the photographs. These family and friend portraits then hold powerful meaning that even by surrounding yourself with loved ones till feel lonely and lost. This also holds meaning as it shows a statistical value of in a group of friends or in a family unit someone could have a mental disorder. In the photograph above the group of 4 male subjects can be seen. This represents the statistic that 1 in 4 people in the UK have a mental health disorder.

These blur effects have worked well each photograph showing isolation in family portraits. The use of genuine family portraits was effecting holding more realistic and sentimental value to the photograph making sure they are not artificial. However all of these photographs where digitally manipulated cutting out the face and blurring the hole. To improve I could print these photographs and physically distort them using either TipEx, Ink, Scratches, Paint and fire. All theses things as well as others could create the feeling of isolation while using physical experiments.
