Experimentations

To me the narrative of this photograph  the darkness within ourselves .This photographs denotations are the after math of a violent attack  or murder as the man leaves the boy lying on the ground injured and dying. This has the connotations of  the resentment and fury within a persons soul. The tension seen in this subject with his position and stance. His arms tensed his body stiff sees him settling down after an outburst calming down in a state of anxiety. He turns his back on the darkness and looks back towards the  light for calming. The inner conflict between good and bad, right and wrong that storms inside of us every day and every night. We can never be sure whether we are good or bad at any given time. We are all persuaded by the voice inside whether to do a good-deed or a bad-deed these two tendencies are completely opposite and we chose to act on which we want. We all as humans want to live a good and happy life and even the nicest most kindhearted people can break and turn to the most ruthless people on the planet to the point of murdering someone. This all represents the mental struggle and torture broken people have to keep them selves smiling and positive in this horrible black and white world. Killing is the visual representation as he turns his back to the darkness and the evil of what he has done and faces the light for comfort.

The theme of this photograph is beneath the surface. This has been influenced by Maren Klemp's photograph. The genre of this photograph is Digital Manipulation this is because i have used Photoshop Elements 14 to further enhance my work to create the Narrative i was aiming for. The camera controls on this photograph uses the ISO set to ISO-200 while its f-stop was set to f/5.6. Its exposure time was 4 seconds. It was took in East Herrington at 5pm. The use of visual elements is shown through the poles holding the roof up. Lines is also seen in the lines of the light rays shining on the subjects.Shape has been used as the edges defined by structure of the house is seen in this piece. The three dimensional qualities of the subjects and structure are shown. Tone helps to emphasise the message and the emotions of this narrative photograph. Intense Hues have been used within my photograph to show colour in this black and white photograph. Space is portrayed by the room taken up by the subjects and the structure leaving the open empty space of the rest of the garden. The different saturation of hue on the grass shows texture with its rough quality. Qualities of composition is also been integrated within my photograph as the vantage point shows and eye level viewpoint  with the camera positioned far away to suggest we are spying and intruding on the action within the scene. Rule of thirds can apply as the boy lies on the bottom axis. The rule of odds and evens can be shown as there is an even number of subjects in the frame creating the feeling of tension. The shape of the roof on the structure is portraying the rule of triangles. This photograph is more dynamic whilst conveying specific meaning and a message using the rule of space. The use of the natural sun light as it sets help creates the shadows and the shade within this piece. The use of artificial light was created with a studio light been position on the left of the frame to shine a brighter light on the subjects to create the idea the sun was hitting the subject. Post production effects were also used with filters to help create a more powerful black and white effect. As well as light rays to show the direction of the light.

The theme of this photograph is beneath the surface. The genre of this photo is digital manipulation as Photoshop Elements 14 has been used to colour correct the colour temperature from a orange hue tint to a more natural colour as well as blend the two photographs together of the old and young man. For camera control the ISO was set to ISO-200 while the F-Stop was set to F/4.8. The Shutter speed was also set to 1/200. This photograph was taken in East Herrington. This photograph includes the use of lines shown with the straight lines of the mirror.  The element of shape is displayed using the subjects as their area are defined by their edges within my photograph. The three dimensional quality of the fireplace shows my use of form within this work. The visual element of tone is shown with the light tones of the reflection against the dark tone of the jacket. Colour is used within the photograph with the cream wallpaper suggesting calmity while the white shirt the younger man wears suggests purity that he is young and pure and has his life to live while the blue the old man is wearing suggests stability in this mans life that he has lives a good and happy life like he wanted when he was young and pure. The element of space is shown as the subjects take up a large part of the space and all of it is filled showing the action is focused on them using each detail to tell a story ( This allows the use of composition to be used using the rule of space). The smooth quality of the fire place and walls shows the element of texture showing how the mans life and home is secure. Composition is also used within this piece as the vantage point sees us at a side perspective to help see the reflection of the Old man as well as not reveal to much but still see the start of his facial emotions. Cropping was used in this photograph during the post production stages of cropping out the true reflections of the original photographs (Seen below) and replaced them with the new images to create the narrative of this photograph. The rule of odds and evens is used with an even number of subjects however it doesnt create a feeling of tension as it usually has before, this is possibly due to the illusion that its just one subject and his reflection.meaning there is only one subject within the photograph.

To me the narrative of this photograph  is the reflection of how we view ourselves. The old man looks into the mirror reflecting back on his whole life and what he has done and achieved in life. He looks back to his younger days when he was young and energetic. He maintains the gentleman qualities and and style he had when he was younger. The 82 year old man still sees himself as the 17 year old man he once was. Mentally he is young still full of life, happy, joyous and healthy. To The old man this is who he is, inside this is the man he is where on the outside you grow old but on the inside you can stay young. It visually shows that you may grow old but you can never grow up. This can even represent and tell the story of the child inside us. The constant tendancies that humans have all through our our lives when we feel like a child again. The feeling of not wanting to grow up been socially unacceptable to be a child or childish again sometimes leads people into depression thinking they cant have fun or be silly and daft is shown as the child we once where the child, that we still want to be, the child that we want to stay as lives inside us all through our whole life.
