Frank Miller uses the contrast between black and white to create his scenes allowing for shadows to heavily be highlighted. However the colour red usually seen on female characters ( Lip stick, nails, Dress ) are popped out to contrast the black and white and to draw attention the the female with connotations of love and anger to resemble the film and story he is telling.
