Development of Ideas
This page has helped me focus on what i can do to develop my ideas. The production of photoshoot 12 has influenced me to continue to work with this idea of the woman in red figure tormenting and hurting the male subject. This is because it can share denotations of domestic violence towards men, with the theme and idea of love ( this happy and joyful emotion) turned to sinister and the cause of the pain. While also having connotations of the woman being the embodiment of mental health disorders. I will also be using Frank Millers style work seen in Sin City with the technique of colour popping.

Photo-shoot Title:
"Sea Of Souls"

Photo-Shoot Concept & Aim:

The aim of this photo-shoot is to create a visual representation of someone who suffers from either or both depression or schizophrenia or any mental health issues for that matter. The concept will be to show the tiring effects of constantly dealing and living with them. If left untreated it will show the idea of how much of an obstacle it can become.

Date & Timing:
This photo-shoot will take place on the 27th of November 2017 at 3pm. This time allows the sun to shine through the window giving the subject some natural light and brightens them up allowing for a clear photograph. The light will also help create some shadows in the creases and folds of the model and their clothing so that in post production i can exploit them while changing the contrast bar,

Location:

This will take place in East Herrington with in a bed room. I will need no permission. This location will be seen from a medium shot on the subject as i must include their body and head. The camera will be positioned eye level with the subject yet far enough back to allow them to be seen with the majority of their body.

Props:
Little props are needed within this photoshoot as it is just a clean image of the model however appropriate clothing will be needed to create the best photograph.

Models:
To keep within the theme and style of Self Portrait photography I will be my own model this also goes with the audience in which i wish to attract showing males can have mental disorders.

Team:

There is no team needed as i will be working alone for this shoot. I have a tripod to stand the camera on and I shall set a timer for the camera to capture the photographs. Everything before will be set up my me and post production work will continue to be done by me, of course because this is my personal project.

Equipment  and Preparation:
The camera I have used for this photoshoot is a Fujifilm Finepix S9600 Camera with a Integrated 28-300mm lens. The batteries were fully charged before shoot. Additional lighting was used with a studio light facing the model or pointing away to create dark shadows. The ISO settings will be set to  ISO-200 while the shutter Shutter Speed will be set on 1/500seconds and an Aperture of  f/4.5.

Desired Shots:

My desired shot is the subject to be standing alone against a while wall looking as tormented and broken as physically possible with a black bubble above his head to show the mouths of him and others which will represent the symptoms of this Disorder. The photograph will be converted into black and white with sections altered with different contrast levels to make the photograph dramatic.

The concept of this photograph was to show ideas of love and lust, The desire for affection from a significant other. The aim of this photoshoot was to demonstrate the damaging mental affects from a toxic relationship that inflicts pain. This damaging relationship obsessive compulsion disorder can cause such health issues of depression and anxiety. This photograph was taken on the 15th December 2017 at around 6pm this  allowed for a dark night to be upon my subjects. It was taken in Sunderland where i live as my room could be altered at this dark time as well as keep me and my subject warm. I have a plain white wall allowing easier editing to be done afterwards. No props were needed for this shoot, The Models included Becca Brown to play the woman of my photoshoot and myself to maintain the theme of Self-Portraits. The Team is me alone, I will be incharge in setting everything up and taking it while Becca will just be the model. I used a Canon EOS 1300D 18.0 MP DSLR Camera - 1080p camera to capture these images, i used additional artificial lights to illuminate the subjects faces as well as a tripod for the camera to stand. The hope i had for this shoot was to have a mans face from the front with the woman coming in from the side, the image  converted black and white with her red lips popping out in colour. The Narrative of this photograph links with the title "Twisted Desires" conveys the idea of the man twisting his head away from the woman after him, she keeps him on a chain, she controls him. The lips represent words which will be used to keep him attached. The desire for her and what she is supposed to stand for is twisted by what she actually is and represents. The Genre of my work is Digital Manipulation. The Aperture is f/5.6 with the shutter speed on 1/400 seconds and the ISO on ISO-100 for maximum quality, Light as mentioned earlier is used to light up the subjects faces making the shadows more defined. Visual Elements such as Line which can be seen on the skin of the subject are used to develop my photograph. Form is present with the edges of the subjects defining a three dimensional photograph.
Tone is used to exaggerate the darkness from the light in a high contrast. Colour was removed to communicate dark themes however the red is popped out to represent similar artist styles to Frank Miller in his Sin City work. The red is used as it shared both light and happy connotations as well as dark and bad connotations. The quality on the surface of the skin for the subject shows the texture of this photograph. Pattern is not used. The Composition is important for this photograph. Vantage Points are considered for this piece such as the position of the subjects making it a close up to allow a two person shot. Cropping  was done to bring the male closer to the fame. Framing was used to have the woman leaning in from the side and the man to be cowering out the other. Rule Of Thirds therefore have been used to have the subjects on each line. Rule Of Odds and evens was applied as the two subjects creates tension. Rule Of Triangles is present on cheeks, nose and ears, creating structure to the photograph. Rule Of Space is not used within my piece as I did not want the image to seem moving. Symmetry was not Incorporated therefore this photograph is asymmetrical. Repetition and Pattern are also not shown. The original photograph was used created with the two single portraits of the subjects digitally edited on top of one another. This did not work as well as i intended as when overlaying the photographs it is clearly shown that they are two separate images. Therefore for my refinement i took a photograph of both models together in one image and used Cam Raw to boost up the Clarity. This works extremely well as the woman is in focus with a closer shot of the man going slightly out of focus adding further messages via composition.

This will help develop my final piece as i know to take consideration into the use of composition creating focus points for the audience and make an effective black and white image using artificial light and using post production effects like Cam Raw to boost up the Clarity and alter the levels. Colour Popping the lips was a difficult challenge to complete and thus i will stick to colour popping clothes.

"BlindSight"

Refinement

The title of this piece is "The Echo Of My Illness". The Concept of my work is to show a dependent personality disorder which is defined as a pervasive and excessive need to be taken care of that leads to submissive and clinging behavior as well as fears of separation. This pattern begins by early adulthood and is present in a variety of contexts. The dependent and submissive behaviors are designed to elicit care giving and arise from a self-perception of being unable to function adequately without the help of others. No props were needed for this shoot, The Models included Rebecca Brown to play the woman of my photoshoot and myself to maintain the theme of Self-Portraits. The Team is me alone, I will be incharge in setting everything up and taking it while Rebecca Brown will just be the model. I used a Canon EOS 1300D 18.0 MP DSLR Camera - 1080p camera to capture these images, i used additional artificial lights to illuminate the subjects bodies as well as a tripod for the camera to stand. The hope i had for this shoot was a man standing innocently and lonesome looking while the appearance of a romantic relationship flows from him, being apart of him showing his dependence on the girl. The Narrative of this photograph is to show the feelings of a man with a depended personality disorder. The connection he has to the woman who is apart of him and her liquefied body leaks into him attaching them with a inseparable bond to represent this unhealthy need of constant attention. The Genre of this photograph is Digital Manipulation. The Aperture was set to f/5.6 with a Shutter Speed of 1/50 seconds and the ISO on ISO-100. Artificial Light was used on the subject.
Visual Elements such as Line can be seen in the fingers of the female and creases in the T-shirt of the male. Form is present with the three dimensional quality of the subjects with the woman behind the man. Tone is used because of the black and white to allow each colour to contrast the other.  Colour is used with the red of the female to pop out. Texture is seen within the subjects hair as well as the skin of the male. Pattern is is shown via repetition of her stretched fingers or curly hair. Composition was important for the piece The Vantage Points had to show a medium shot of the male but far enough away to include the woman as well. Cropping was done to remove the background creating simplification for the photograph. Framing was done to allow he subjects in the frame of the photograph. Rule Of Thirds was ignored to create tension. Rule Of Odds And Evens was applied to create dynamic tension.Rule Of Triangles is shown on the composition and framing of the subjects body positions.Rule Of Space was ignored to appear trapped. Symmetry was not needed.Repetition and Pattern are only seen within the curls of the hair and clothing choices.

This development (and experiment) will help me understand different techniques and process to use for my final design. Experimenting with the tools i want to carry on and the technique needed to carry them out. The use of Cam Raw and colour popping is great and well needed however the idea of simplification is one i dont want to use after developing this idea.

The concept of this photograph is to show a women reflected within a mans eye the the aim is to show how blinded someone can be when fixated on something or someone. The argument "The eyes are a window to the soul" plays a part in stating the woman is part of his soul, the illness and pain that is apart of who he is comes from her, she is the reason behind it. "The Eyes Never Lie" when asking oneself what is wrong with me? the answer lies within.I have taken this photograph on the 15th December 2017 at around 6pm this  allowed for a dark night to be upon me so that the light i shined into the subjects eye will help create the better effect. I used a Canon EOS 1300D 18.0 MP DSLR Camera - 1080p camera to capture these images, i used additional artificial lights to allow my photograph to be clear as well as a tripod for the camera to stand. The hope I had hoped to achieve was a extreme close up of the male subjects eye with the woman in red to be reflected within his eye. The whole photograph would be converted to black and white with the red dress colour popped out. and the girl to be in faded colour. The Narrative of this photograph was to show love and lust for someone, the man struggles to focus on anything else other than her. Denotations of love with the focus on her but the black and white provide the message of pain to be communicated. Connotations that the woman is the illness and the reason for this man to be in pain, she is what is standing in his way and until he stops focusing on her he can never move on.The genre of this photograph is digital manipulation. The aperture was set really low to allow more light in while the shutter speed was set quite high. ISO was on 100 for maximum quality and artificial light was used as mentioned earlier.Visual Elements have helped create this photograph as lines of the skin has helped create a photograph similar to that of Lee Jeffries, an artist i have looked at. Form has helped create this photograph the edges of the eye were key to get the reflection of the women perfect. Tone is obviously needed to develop my message with the darkness and lightness around the subjects eye and skin. Colour was necessary for the absence of it on the man and the pop of it displayed on the woman. Texture was needed to show the quality and texture of the males skin. Pattern is implemented within the eyelashes being in focus. Composition of the photograph was important as the vantage point needed to be an extreme close up of the subjects eye using direct mode of address. Cropping was done to crop down further and further to the eye of the subject. Framing was done to allow the woman to be in the direct centre of the photograph giving a feeling of tension and unease.  Therefore Rule of thirds was not applied, Rule of odds and evens is used with the two subjects of a man and woman being used together to create that feeling of tension. rule of triangles could be present with the triangles in the eye. Rules of space wasn't used as we needed no space at all for the subject to have any other association other than the woman. Symmetry in the eye could be discussed though it is not perfectly symmetrical and repetition and pattern can only be found within the skin or eyelashes of the male subject. The refinement of my work takes a further development of the process. The girl no longer is cut off in a right angle but more fades into the circumference of the eye. The texture of the skin has also been modified to make it more distinct, helping it stand out.

This development is needed for my work as it gives me a better knowledge of understand for what i want my final piece to be, The idea of using another subject such as  the woman will allow me to convey a deeper message of mental illness, not only the effects of mental illness within men but also domestic violence towards men. Breaking social stereotypes.

The Genre of my photography is Digital Manipulation. Digital Manipulation photography is images that have been altered using editing software to add an effect or warp the image into something so surreal, so creative that it can speak a thousand words and have so much meaning and represent the littlest emotion to something huge. The Aperture was set to f/4.5. The Shutter Speed was set to 1/500 seconds. The ISO was set to ISO-200. Natural Light was used for this photograph. It was raining and so the clouds were grey allowing for a better look for the over all photograph. Artificial light was used and tested but for this photograph it was not used and it makes it look more grainy.

Visual Elements have been used. Line can be seen on the male subjects collar shown on the shirt and the branch on the side as well as lines on the creases of the girls dress. Lines are Actual or implied Lines within the composition and was also used on the arrows that are digitally placed within the photograph. The use of lines helps create structure within my piece. Shape is used within my piece on the trees and grass within the subject this is because shape is the areas defined by their edges within the piece. The use of shape helps this photograph add a third dimension and depth. Form has been shown by the three dimensional qualities of both subjects this is because form is the three dimensional quality of an object or shape its length, width and depth this helps the photograph as a photograph with dimensions and perspective is much more engaging and interesting.Tone is heavily used within my work as the background trees are made darker around the subjects while the subjects have lighter tones. This is because tone describes the darkness or lightness of a particular area in an image. This helps my photograph focus the attention on the subject and what is in the foreground rather than the background. Shading from light to dark tone is often used to emphasize the form ( an objects three dimensional quality).Colour is used with this photograph as the green from the grass will contrast the red from  the dress. This is because colour are the hues with their various values, intensity and saturation. This helps the photograph as the red dress contrasts the green landscape and so allows the colour to pop and the subjects to be the focus point. The next visual element of photography that i have incorporated within my work is space. Space is defined as the space taken up by objects or the space in between objects ( sometimes called negative space)and this can be seen where the entire left side of my photograph has been left blank or has a lack of subjects. This will help the photograph because of the rule of thirds which i will discuss later. Texture is shown with the texture of the leaves and green life. This is because texture is the surface qualities of artwork. Pattern can faintly be seen in the lines of grass This helps my photograph as it gives it a certain quality needed for the message i am trying to convey. Pattern is Surface designs, repetition, visual interest. and we can see repetition in wildlife.

A range of compositions have been used to achieve this photograph.
Vantage Points is one of them, vantage points are a position or standpoint from which something is viewed. Angle, Eye view, Outlook, slant, perspective and viewpoint. This vantage point is a high angle as it looks (slightly) down on the subjects this helps the photograph as it belittles the subjects and looks down on them . Another competition i have used is Framing and Cropping. This is because i have framed the subjects to the right of the photograph. This helps as people traditionally read from left to right therefore if we view pictures the same the subjects are the last to be seen however because of the dress it forces our eyes to go to the "wrong" side of the image creating un-naturally feelings
I have used a selection of photograph one of which is the Rule Of Thirds. This rule indicates that the image can divide into thirds and if  the main visual components (things in the image) lie on or near the lines then the image often tends to look 'right'. This can be seen as the right vertical sector is where the subjects lands on. This works for my people tend to focus on the eyes of others and therefore since the horizontal sector on the top focuses lands on the eyes of the male the rule works. Another Rule Of Odds and Evens which is defined as an even number of 'things' in an image can sometimes create a feeling of tension or a slightly un-natural look...while an odd number of 'things' can often create a feeling of harmony or balance. This is shown as there are only two subjects and this photograph has a slight un-nautral look to it creating tension and drama. This helps my photograph as that is the exact feelings i am aiming to get out of this photograph.
Rule Of Triangles can be shown in females body creating triangles. Triangles have 3 sides and tend to form stable solid looking compositions. This helps my photograph as it shows the female (the embodiment of pain)  as stable and immovable even if the mental state of the male is completely unstable. The last rule is the Rule Of Space which allows the image to appear more dynamic whilst conveying specific meaning or messages. This is seen as the subjects have loads of space thanks to the rule of thirds and helps convey the message of my work. Symmetry is not used with in this piece as it is when the image is equally balanced ( No symmetry would be asymmetrical, therefore this image is asymmetrical). This is used well for my work as i do not want a balanced photograph linking in with the communicated message. Repetition and Pattern, as previously mentioned in visual elements,  can be used to suggest texture, or can produce an abstract visual experience. and has been briefly used within the grass. Simplification was not used as the forest is meant to contrast the clothes the subjects are wearing. This helps my work create the surreal feel towards it.

The Narrative of my photograph displays the mental disorder of Depression. Depression is a common mental disorder that causes people to experience depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration. This also portrays Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a serious disorder which affects how a person thinks, feels and acts. Someone with schizophrenia may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is imaginary; may be unresponsive or withdrawn; and may have difficulty expressing normal emotions in social situations. This photographs uses of the woman as the embodiment of the mental disorder. The idea that the male carries around these issues, thoughts and delusions to the point of exhaustion. Like the previous photoshoot. This can also carry on and it conveys the message that even though the female hurt him and has caused him pain his delusions show him to still care and "save" her when she falls. The narrative shows that you will outlive the pain caused and inflected upon you however you carry around the scars of that pain.

Developing Ideas

My 13th and final idea allows me to tie in my final photoshoots with my development of idea. This concept on using the female subject in red and the males obsessing and reliance on her while all else is black and white, in the style of Sin City Influenced by Frank Miller using the colour popping technique. I will test different ideas and refine my skills that i have began to develop.
