Artist Research

Scott Carroll

Brief -

Graphic Design Made Visible. Respond to an external issue relating to either (food, health or migration). Identify a specific area of focus / series of research questions and produce a research-led design response.

Creative Solution -

Mental ill health and suicide affects men up and down the UK on a daily basis, but why is that? Men have a tendency to remain silent when it comes to their mental health, the stigma surround men makes it hard for them to put a voice to their emotions which results in bottling them up. The creative solution of the problem is to give men a platform and help them understand that it is ok to cry and feel lonely because it's a normal experience when mentally ill. Creating a book and a poster series proving these men with the harsh reality of mental ill health and suicide it will give them the encouragement to be more open with how they feel and get help them so desperately need. Kick out the stigma and give men a voice.

Poster Series -

The poster series reflects the content within the book, however the posters need to have more of an impact that will make people stop and digest the information provided. The idea of having strong powerful photography that you wouldn't see day to day makes the public think about the stigma that surrounds males of the UK and those who do suffer from a mental illness can feel they can open up and speak about their emotions because they can heavily relate to the posters created.

Chloe Dersley

Chloe Dersley created posters for her coursework graphic finals. These posters were created in favour of the Mental Awareness Foundation to help advertise the campaign to help people in need or who suffer from a mental illness. They are all her photography and design apart from the logo which belongs to the foundation itself.

Rob Murray

Rob Murray entered a competition with his ideas for the Mental Health Foundation. The brief was “to come up with a poster campaign to help the public understand the invaluable benefits of mindfulness, a simple and modern form of meditation that alleviates stress”. The competition was geared towards creatives from both advertising and design with an aim “to come up with one photographic execution that would grab the attention of the nation and drive them to look into the charity further, with the final photography to be shot by one of the LPA roster of photographers”.

This is the pair’s original winning scamp which, for those who may not be familiar with the term  is a first rough/mockup that is usually used in a creative context as in “scamp up a design during a design brief”.

Stamp Out Stigma is an initiative spearheaded by the Association for Behavioral Health and Wellness (ABHW) to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and substance use disorders. This campaign challenges each of us to transform the dialogue on mental health and addiction from a whisper to a conversation.Members of the Association for Behavioral Health and Wellness participating in the campaign include Aetna Behavioral HealthBeacon Health OptionsCenpaticoCignaMHNNew Directions Behavioral Health, and PerformCare. It is the goal of Stamp Out Stigma to change perceptions and reduce the stigma of mental illness and substance use disorders by encouraging people to talk about them.Mental health and substance use disorder diagnoses are more prevalent than heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, migraines, osteoporosis and asthma, yet misconception and misinformation have left many people with mental illness and substance use disorders afraid to talk about their experiences or to seek help.
