Shawn Coss is an artist based in Ohio who enjoys ink drawings. He works on
a very popular webcomic and cartoon show called "Cyanide and Happiness".
His full time job is drawing and has been drawing as long as he remembers.
He self taught himself "Dark art" as he enjoys the creepy and unsettling art.
Most of his work include a skeletal or demonic creature brought to life over his use of form, tone and contrast. Colour is almost never used and so he heavily relies on the white of the paper and the black ink of his tools.
The work i am most interested in is his #Inktober work on disorders. Inktober is an annual event were every October artists from all around the planet take on this #Inktober challenge by drawing one ink drawing a day for the entirety of the month and posting it on social media with the hashtag "Inktober" it was created by Jake Parker in 2009 as a way he could improve his Ink drawing skills and now is an international event for anyone to take part in.
Shawn Coss' submissions for Inktober have a haunting and creepy presence to them and even tho he is an artist and not photographer gives me a challenge of taking these illustrations and of perfect representations of a number of different mental disorders and bringing them to life. His work strikes the heart of views really making people see mental disorders as what they are. A sickness that must be fixed and shows the grim reality of people living and suffering from and i look to create this with my photographs.
Shawn Coss' work will inform my ideas and help my project by enforcing codes and conventions needed to successfully and properly represent mental health issues and different disorders. His use of tone and shadows will be a visual element i adapt into my work and study properly.
