Final Outcome

Personal Investigation

In this page I will talk about my path from my start to my final outcome. The journey I have taken to achieve my work and create the products I have.

Firstly if we revisit my  Intentions my Bubble-map of my personal project saw a clear focus on my desire to capture and photograph Mental Health with alot of aspects within that I thought would be good to implement and use within my work. There are a number of suggestions on my bubble map that I have either experimented in are used for my photoshoots. For example i have used a forrest within my photoshoot "Were All Ghost Stories". I have used a Bedroom within a number of photoshoots, the most prominent is "BedBugs". I have experimented with simplifications with experiments in the style of Shawn Coss, and i have experimented with Shadows within the photoshoot "My Shadow And Me". I have used each artist research or reference in one way or another either in a whole selection of experiments to develop my skills such as Christian Hopkins with Digital Manipulation or Alex Stoddard for Surrealism. From my moodboard we see I have been influenced from images in this subject for my own work. My Statement of intent discusses my aim to focus on Self-Portrait work in the aims to raise awareness for Mental Health Disorders by visually representing them using digital manipulation. That has been evident throughout my entire project and we can see how the foundation of my work is the same however now closer to the end my work has developed and changed slightly to incorporate another model into my work so that instead of just focusing on the physical portrayal of mental disorders  we can see denotations of Domestic Violence towards males. The connotations are then the female is the physical embodiment of the Mental Disorders and will represent the cause of the disorder.

The Artists i have looked at are Christian Hopkins and his Mental Health Photography, Shawn Coss and his Inktober work, Rosie Hardy and her Shadow work, Alex Stoddard and his Surrealism work,  Scott Carroll for his Mental Health Awareness work, Chloe Dersley and her Im Fine work, Rob Murray with his Mindfulness work, Stamping Out The Stigma with their Mental Health Campaign, MQ with their Transforming Mental Health work, Frank Miller with his Sin City work, Edward Honaker with his Depression Documentary, Federico Bebber and his Digital Manipulation work, Laura Hospes with her self-portrait photography, Maren Klemp with her mental health documentary work, Lee Jeffries for his use with simplification and the focus on the quality of the face.
Here we can see how each artist has influenced me in one form or another. Christian Hopkins and Alex Stoddard are great influences for my Photoshoots because of their ideas and creations documenting mental health and their work with digital manipulation making photographs surreal. Federico Bebber was my first influence who got me in to creating Digital Manipulated photographs while Edward Honaker was my influence to capture and document mental health focusing mainly on depression. Shawn Coss was a main influence for my experiments helping me understand visually draw portrayal of mental illnesses.  Artists / Photographers such as Scott Carroll and MQ helped me in later developments with experiments in Digital and Physical experiments in using my photographs to create Awareness advertisements for mental health issues. Sadly I did not take it further. Finally closer to the end Frank Miller is now a huge contribution with his colour popping technique used in Sin City with the black and white heavily contrasting one another and the colour red being used only.

My First Photoshoot, "The Noise In My Head", aims to visually represent Schizophrenia. This photoshoot is influenced by Shawn Coss and uses digital manipulation and simplification as the main elements. This photoshoot helped me get a start in digital manipulation and allows me to use simplification to try and convey my message.
My Second Photoshoot, "Me and My Shadow", continues to use simplification like the first photoshoot however to less success.  This shoot aimed to represent Social Anxiety with shadows attacking the subject and was also inspired by Shawn Coss. This shoot helped me understand importance of composition and quality while using body language to convey messages.
My Third Photoshoot, "Drowning In A Sea Of Broken Dreams", aims to represent Anxiety and Claustrophobia. This photoshoot was  influenced by Rosie Hardy and was attempting to use layers as well as a real world setting instead of simplifications with the use of objects and environments to create metaphors to convey meaning. This photoshoot is my least favorite of them all as I am unsatisfied with the work produced.
My Fourth Photoshoot, "Here We Go Again", Has elements of simplification while still being set in a real world setting. This shoot required little to no digital manipulation and was all done physically there with lights altered in post production. This helps me understand importance of the mise-en-scene and physical objects to create effective photographs.

My Fifth Photoshoots, "BedBugs", includes more of an environment than previous simplification shoots. This was inspired by Christian Hopkins and helps me develop skills in post production with digital manipulation and creating surreal figures and scenarios. This helped me develop skills in blending photographs together.

My Sixth Photoshoot, "They Come From Nightmares",  disregards simplification and instead focuses on the setting with the importance of composition, framing and mise-en-scene. This uses effects to merge photographs together and it has worked very well and I am proud of this outcome.

My Seventh Photoshoot, "Were All Ghost Stories", aim to represent a paranoid mind this photoshoot like the previous is developing my use of environments to represent Mental Health and creating metaphors to visually portray Mental Illness.
My Eight Photoshoot, "Nobody Knows Who I Really Am", this photoshoot was inspired by Christian Hopkins and aims to represent depression. I try to create a mix of simplification and a physical environment with possible experiments of close ups and having the focus on certain parts of the human body or face.

My Ninth Photoshoot, "Do You Feel Insane Yet?", inspired by Christian Hopkins aims to portray a Multiple Personality Disorder. This shoot helped me refine my skills of cutting and selecting subjects and items out of one photograph and blending them with another one.
My Tenth Photoshoot, "I Am My Demon", aimed to portray a Paranoid Schizophrenic Disorder, this was inspired by Christian Hopkins and aims to refine my skills in creating surreal portraits of the this was a long and difficult photo to create and has alot it could improve on however I am very pleased with its outcome.
My Eleventh Photoshoot,"Save Me From My Mind", which is inspired by Alex Stoddard aims to represent feelings of a relationship breakup, less specifically a heart break. This takes the iconic idea of the arrow through the heart from the GOD Cupid and flips the message on its head. This photoshoot helped me develop my work with Cam Raw and High Pass Filters as this was the first cases I used it.
My Twelfth Photoshoot, "So Young, So Damaged", also inspired by Alex Stoddard with influences from Frank Miller, aims to convey denotations of domestic violence towards men and a break up between lovers while conveying connotations that the woman is the embodiment of the Mental Illness hurting the man. This shoot develops my skills in creating surreal images thurther as well as for the first time using Frank Millers style of Colour Popping as he used in Sin City. This photoshoot would be what has influenced my final development and changed the path of my project.

My Refinement on the First Photoshoot was created to create a higher quality photograph of the original photograph. However its second refinement, "What You've Done To Me" uses the Frank Miller Style work i produced in my Twelfth Photoshoot  as well as include the secondary model of the woman. This is further development into my ideas for my Final Outcome. The third refinement, "Dying From Memories" uses arms instead of hands and this again continues to experiment in the style of Frank Miller and the style I am now creating for myself.
My Refinement on the Second Photoshoot was created to vastly improve the original photograph which has worked better with costume choice and the quality of the shadows.
The Third Photoshoot was never looked at again
The Refinement for the fourth photoshoot was created to make a better more high quality photograph than the original
The Refinement for the fifth photoshoot was created to make a better more high quality photograph than the original
The Refinement for the sixth photoshoot was created to make a more surreal and horror genre type photograph
There are no  refinements for the seventh and eight photoshoot.
The refinement for the ninth photoshoot was produced to try and add a figure closer to the frame.
The Refinement for the ten photoshoot was produced as further development to the product as  it was needed to darken the string and make the photograph more realistic and believable.

The Refinement for the eleventh photoshoot was produced to develop the striking nature of my piece using CamRaw to amplify the settings for my work. The other refinement was to try out my Frank Miller Style work for one of the first times.
The refinement for the twelfth photoshoot was produced to add a more muddy and dirty feel to the photograph which is why the gradient is brown, this also represents earth with links to the environment the photograph is taken in. The following refinement is an improvement of my Sin City Style photography inspired by Frank Miller this now allows the red dress to colour pop out of the photograph. The following refinement was used when developing my Mental Health Awareness posters. This refinement crops the photograph and enhances the image bringing the audience closer, covering and hiding the subjects faces, the colours have contrasted further  and has been the key to my final development work.

My experiments have helped a great deal while researching my artists and the styles, techniques and processes they use.
Christian Hopkins has helped me develop my work within practical experiments to blend with digital enhancements. The first experiment uses nothing more than the mask, close up and simplification background. Almost nothing digital was needed to be done. The second one uses masks on string hanging from the roof. This again barely uses digital manipulation and the final outcome was just rotated to give this illusion. The final one again has a lack of digital manipulation and yet conveys a powerful message.

Shawn Coss is on the complete other end of the spectrum where digital manipulation has been heavily used. He has helped influence my work and develop my work understanding on how to represent mental health disorders. His use of simplification and black and white photograph helped not only develop my work doing digital manipulation but with backgrounds and simplification.
Alex Stoddard helps me create surreal photographs looking at how i can blend both digital manipulation and the real world environment together with his use of colours to help develop and refine my shoots.
Rosie Hardy has helped me develop my work for my use of shadows and has helped with photoshop techniques such as double exposure using levitation effects of cutting and overlays with rubbers to create others.
Frank Miller has greatly influenced my final photoshoots with his colour popping technique used in his Sin City work. He will be a heavy influence in the development of my ideas to come for my final piece. I will experiment with different settings different clothes and compositions of mental health and body language and then i will see what best fits for my final outcome.

During my course I received weekly photography presentations from Mr Miller. He taught me a number of techniques and how to complete them these classes were all relevant to my work in one way or another and his influence is what lead to the techniques and processes in my later photoshoot.
Scott Carroll, Chloe Dersley, Stamping Out Stigma and MQ I experimented with my photoshoots to attempt to make Mental Health Awareness posters linked to my projects theme. These images attempt to use statistics researches and composition ideas with how theses artists have created their mental health campaigns.

As previously mentioned I received weekly presentations and classes on photography.
The first presentation on the 11th of October 2017 was presenting my idea to the class. This is where i wrote about my project and intentions and presented it to the class for feedback and a group crit.
The second presentation on the 17th October 2017 was a class Mr Miller gave on Hurley and Clamshell lighting and High Pass Filter. This taught me how to create successful portrait photographs using lighting and high pass filter to make a subject more define.
The Third presentation was on the 1st of November 2017 and taught me about Cam Raw and further High Pass skills, This class was most effective as CamRaw became very important to later photographs.
The fourth presentation was about lights and shutter speeds this was done on the 8th of November 2017 it isnt that important for the style of photograph im doing in my project.
The fifth presentation on the 15th November 2017 was about levitation. The technique to create this effect was used for other photoshoots and experiments that done require levitation but use a similar technique. In later work and in the Rosie Hardy experiments levitation was needed.
The sixth presentation was on Frank Miller and his Sin City style photography using colour popping and low key lighting as evidence in Film Noir. This presentation was given on the 21st November 2017 and has been a great influence like CamRaw for my later work as I will be using these techniques and skills acquired in my final outcome.
My Final presentation was on the 4th of December 2017 and this was when i gave a  class on all the skills and work i have learned from at the time my 1 and a half years of photography. This was presented to year 12 students who were taking AS Level photograph. I ran through my Photography work from last year's Kick Starter and work my personal inquiry as well as all i have done  this year with the skills i have learned through Mr Millers classes.

This leads me to now starting the development of my Final Outcome what comes after the personal investigation is a reviewment of ideas where i will look at all the photoshoot and experiments i have completed from the start of my project to this point and explain the aim and what the influence each photograph had. This will be useful to see all the finished projects and see how they have developed. I will leave a portfolio section at the bottom just to have an idea of the range and amount of content used to create these photographs.
After that I will create a development of ideas page where I will create a 13th and final photoshoot to link my Photoshoots (mainly 11 and 12) into my development section after that will be a collection of photograph ideas in the development of my technique, process and theme to have an idea for what I desire my final piece to look like.
Once completing that i will have a page for the composition of ideas once i have a theme, an idea and process of how my shoot shall look I will create a number of composition in different environments, different body postures and positions. This will all develop my Final Outcome
When I finish all that i will be able to make my Final Outcome and Final Piece page. I will write it just like another Photoshoot, include a reference images, Refinements, Development process and other sources all coming from what I have learned and completed within this project.
