Photo-shoot Title:
"Nobody Knows Who I really Am"

Photo-Shoot Concept & Aim:

The aim of this photo-shoot is to create a visual representation of someone who suffers from a Depression. Common symptoms of depression include insomnia and trouble sleeping, restlessness. Constant feelings of sadness and 'emptiness' a feeling youre not quite there or your not you. Feelings of worthlessness. The concept of this photograph will be to try and display these symptoms.

Date & Timing:
This photo-shoot will take place on the 20th October 2017 at 2pm. This time allows the sun to shine through the window giving the subject some natural light and brightens them up allowing for a clear photograph. The light will also help create some shadows in the creases and folds of the model and their clothing so that in post production i can exploit them while changing the contrast bar,

Location:

This will take place in East Herrington with in a bed room. I will need no permission. This location will be seen from a medium shot on the subject as i must include their body and head. The camera will be positioned eye level with the subject yet far enough back to allow them to be seen with the majority of their body.

Props:
Little props are needed within this photoshoot as it is just a clean image of the model however appropriate clothing will be needed to create the best photograph. I will need an empty bed and a picture frame for post production effects

Models:
To keep within the theme and style of Self Portrait photography I will be my own model this also goes with the audience in which i wish to attract showing males can have mental disorders.

Team:

There is no team needed as i will be working alone for this shoot. I have a tripod to stand the camera on and I shall set a timer for the camera to capture the photographs. Everything before will be set up my me and post production work will continue to be done by me, of course because this is my personal project.

Equipment  and Preparation:
The camera I have used for this photoshoot is a Canon EOS 1300D Digital SLR with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DC III Lens. The batteries were fully charged before shoot. Additional lighting was used with a studio light facing the model or pointing away to create dark shadows. The ISO settings will be set to  ISO-800 while the shutter Shutter Speed will be set on 1/800seconds and an Aperture of  f/4

Desired Shots:

My desired shot will include the subject sitting on the bed with a blank facial expression and a still body structure. The wall will surround everything around the bed and the subject with images of the subject hanging around the wall.

Outcome

The Genre of this photograph is Digital Manipulation. Camera Control settings have the Aperture set to f/4 the Shutter Speed was set to 1/800 seconds while the ISO was set to ISO-800. Artificial light was used to brighten up the subjects face and create shadows.

Visual Elements have been implemented such as Line, which can be seen on the picture frames, the frame of the bed, the hair on the legs and the bed sheet.Shape can be seen with squares (Rectangles) for the picture frame. Shape can also be shown with the subject himself. Form can be seen with the dimensions of the bed and subject.Tone is used to represent the light and dark areas of the photograph especially since it is black and white. Colour is only shown in the eyes of the subject on the wall this was achieved with a high pass, colour pop technique on photoshop elements 14. Space can be seen with the empty space around the bed. Texture can be seen the in texture of the hairs on ones legs. Pattern can be seen with the hairs on the legs.

Composition has been implemented such as Vantage Points been eye level with the subject. this long shot shows the whole subject with a large amount of space around. Framing and Cropping have been used to crop out objects and the room around the bed and frame the frames in specific places. Rule Of Thirds is ignored in this photograph to create an imbalance. Rule Of Odds and Evens apply as even number of pictures hung up creates tension. Rule Of Triangles can be seen in the right angles of the picture frames. Rule Of Space can be seen to make the photograph more dynamic and support me in conveying a certain message. Symmetry is not used therefore this photograph is asymmetrical. Repetition and Pattern is not purposefully used.Simplification is implemented with the plain background.

Narrative of this photography is to demonstrate the mental disorder of insomnia, which is difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, even when a person has the chance to do so. People with insomnia can feel dissatisfied with their sleep and usually experience one or more of the following symptoms: fatigue, low energy, difficulty concentrating, mood disturbances, and decreased performance in work or at school. This photograph shows how the person is restless in an uncomfortably set bed. The picture frames show fragments of the subjects identity. This represents identity loss, it shows how the subject is losing the essence of who he is.

Evaluation

What i wanted from the shoot:
I wanted to  create a visual representation of someone who suffers from a Depression, Constant feelings of sadness and 'emptiness' a feeling youre not quite there or your not you.
Did I achieve this?
I believe i have successfully created the representation of a subject struggling to sleep, The use of framing elements and fragments from who the subject is has connotations of pieces of mind. He is not quite whole as fragments are lost or broken.

How can I Improve Further?

I could improve this by a better selection of images to put into the picture frame as well as a change in the composition and design of the subject. Changing the clothes might have a better effect. I could also possibly put him on a wooden floor and position him further from the camera.

Follow Up Progress

This will link into my next photoshoot by covering the subjects face and using duplication to have multiple copies in one photograph
