Final Outcome

Final Outcome

Photo-shoot Title:
"Stand By Me"

Photo-Shoot Concept & Aim:

The aim of this photoshoot is to take the idea of the train track  from my Composition plan and refine it and develop it into my final outcome. The Concept of this photograph is to represent loss. Denotations of the photograph will be a break up, the woman walking away from being with the man. Connotations of this photograph will be that the effects the woman leaves behind the pain and scars, She leaves the hole in the man that breaks him and is the effects of the mental illness. The aim is to visually represent this scenario in a surreal sense from the eyes of people who Suffer Mental Health Disorders
Date & Timing:
This photo-shoot will take place on the 8th of January 2018 at 2pm. This time allow for a clear photograph and for no trains to be on the track. This is then the closest weekend to me that im free during this selected time.

Location:

This will take place in East Tanfield Railway. This location is perfect as the tracks will be empty with no trains. But more importantly the train tracks are still there. Alot of unused railroads are getting taken apart for scraps and money so it has been difficult to find. This location is also pretty close to home so is perfect for my work.
Props:
No Props are needed for this photoshoot. The image of the track will be a plain photograph of the track and the digitally manipulated boy and girl need nothing but the costume.
Models:
To keep within the theme and style of Self Portrait photography I will be my own model this also goes with the audience in which i wish to attract showing males can have mental disorders. Rebecca Brown is also the female model for this photograph as the female.
Team:
I myself am a multi-skilled photographer and thus will be the photographer, the locations scout, the editor, the model and the director. Rebecca Brown will be the secondary model for my piece.

Equipment  and Preparation:
The camera I have used for this photoshoot is a CANON EOS 1300D DSLR Camera with 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens - Blac. The batteries were fully charged before shoot. Additional lighting was used with a studio light facing the model or pointing away to create dark shadows. The ISO settings will be set to  ISO-100 while the shutter Shutter Speed will be set on 1/500seconds and an Aperture of  f/5.6
Desired Shots:

My desired shot is the camera to be placed on the railroad so that we watch it go off in a straight line continuously to the centre of the photograph. The male subject will be on his knees in agony, we will view him from the back. His TShirt will be transparent so we can see the girl in red walking in the centre of the track but to the left on the subject to represent the heart. The image will be converted to black and white apart from the womans red dress.

"Product"

The Genre of this photograph is Digital Manipulation. I have used a variety of Camera Control such as The Aperture which i have set to F/5.6, The Shutter Speed which i left on 1/500 seconds and finally ISO which was changed to ISO-100. Light was used by the sun and artificial lights were used on the subjects in the photoshoot room.
Visual Elements  have been implemented within this photoshoot with the use of Line, this can be seen by the  tall grass and the railroad. Line is a point that continues; it implies motion. Lines are open and lead the eyes into a photograph or to an interesting point of the photo. Shape which are areas defined by their edges within the piece it is a two-dimensional representation of something we recognize. Within this piece we recognize the wildlife and the railroads. Form which is the  three dimensional quality of an object or shape its length, width and depth. Form refers to when shape takes on three dimensions. Form is created by shadows and highlights on an object in the photograph. Here the shadows on the female and male allow us to view the photograph in a three dimensional quality. Tone Describes the darkness or lightness of a particular area in an image. Shading from light to dark tone is often used to emphasize the form ( an objects three dimensional quality) This tone can be seen within the colours used the contrast of the dark to light colours. Colour can be seen with the Hues with their various values, intensity and saturation this is evident in my production and in the screenshots where i turn up the saturation levels. Space is the Space taken up by objects or the space in between objects ( sometimes called negative space) Here we see the space on the tracks is taken up by the male and the end of the track in the horizon is taken up by the female. Texture, which is the Surface qualities of artwork, helps to emphasize the features and details in a photograph. By capturing "texture" of objects being photographed, you can create form. The texture present is the stones and metal of the tracks. The final visual element is pattern which is the surface designs, repetition, visual interest. Pattern can be seen in the pattern of the horizontal lines of the tracks.

Composition is an important part of photography. I have used a range of rules and techniques to add into the composition of this final piece. One of these is vantage points which is a position or standpoint from which something is viewed. Angle, Eye view, Outlook, slant, perspective and viewpoint. This photograph takes a low angle shot with the camera close to the ground but and eye level shot as the male subjects brought himself down. Cropping refers to the removal of the outer parts of an image to improve framing, accentuate subject matter or change aspect ration. Depending on the application, this may be performed on a physical photograph or piece of artwork, Framing and Cropping was done to create the composition as i had to frame the tracks so they would both leave the photograph on the bottom left and right of the frame. The subjects were then cropped out of their photographs and framed in the centre of the photograph. The Rule of thirds Divide the image into thirds if the main visual components (things in the image) lie on or near the lines then the image often tends to look 'right'. In this image the horizon line is on tone the bisector. This photograph breaks this rule in order for the photograph to look 'wrong' creating that message i am wanting to convey. The rule of odd and even states an even number of 'things' in an image can sometimes create a feeling of tension or a slightly un-natural look...while an odd number of 'things' can often create a feeling of harmony or balance. This photograph includes two subjects with will give the photograph that feeling of tension. The rule of triangles states that Triangles have 3 sides and tend to form stable solid looking compositions. Within this piece Triangles can be seen at various points. The Rule Of Space, Allows the image to appear more dynamic whilst conveying specific meaning or messages. This will help when conveying my message and meaning. Symmetry which is when the image is equally balanced ( No symmetry would be asymmetrical ) has been attempted within this piece, It may not be 100% but it is quite symmetrical. Repetition and Pattern can be used to suggest texture, or can produce an abstract visual experience. are seen in the repetition of the lines of the track. Simplification which is just a simple photographs, Main object in frame with a plain background was not used as i needed more within this piece.

The narrative of this photograph has the denotations of a relationship between a man and a woman where the woman has walked away and left the man on his knees. The position of the subject allows the female to represent the heart. Which has been torn from the male. This photograph has the connotations and deeper meaning of the inevitable fate. The track represents a destination in which the subject is travelling. The female represents the embodiment of the illnesses who has gotten further than the subject suggesting that he is losing the fight or the "Race" to beat the illness and that his condition is far beyond his reach. It has done its damage and is walking away leaving the subject helpless

"Refinement"

This refinement allows me to keep the style I have personally been using of the Frank Miller style Sin City work where the colour pop of the red dress will contrast against the black and white. This is done to erase colour from the world allowing it to be viewed as black and white.

"Final Outcome"

The final outcome uses CamRaw to alter the settings of my refinement and create this final product. The Clarity was boosted to near 100% with the vibrancy levels going up for the red dress added Shadows and highlights were needed with a boost in saturation and contrast. Exposure was then lowered.  This is create a more surreal and striking photograph

"Evaluation"

Black and white photography has so much versatility as it can be done to basically almost any photograph. Colour photographs work best in good light or sunny days. The challenge is to use the multiple shades and colours between black and white to create a more creative photography than one with colour as colour can distract the viewer. Black and white is used for story telling and is great in portrait photographs. Theses features are useful for my project. The colour red represents both evil and love, danger and romance. Therefore it is the perfect colour to use to tell the story of my project.

What I like about this photograph is the use of visual elements and composition that I have used to tell the narrative of the photograph. I believe they have worked very well and have helped in making an effective final piece.

There are elements to improve naturally, A better lens and location could help in making a better quality piece. Alternative camera controls also could have allowed for a more effective photograph.
If I were to do it again I would do refinement hoots for the male subject as well as to alternative camera controls with the F-stop and shutter speed.
